Indications

It is a first-generation broad-spectrum antibacterial antibiotic indicated for infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Cephalexin is one of the most widely used antibiotics in dogs and cats. It is used to treat infections caused by Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species, and less frequently for infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.

Cephalexin is the first-choice antibiotic for both superficial and deep canine pyodermas, especially the latter, as it has shown superior effectiveness. It is also used in cases of furunculosis, abscesses, and infected wounds. It has proven to be very effective in infections of the upper respiratory tract, bronchi, and lungs.

Prolonged use in the treatment of canine pyoderma — about 30 days for superficial cases and 60 to 90 days (up to 6 months) for deep pyodermas — provides excellent therapeutic results. However, antibacterial rotation is recommended in recurrent cases to avoid resistance and preserve this antibiotic as an essential tool in daily clinical practice.
